Tuesday 3 july
One day in Surabaya. Why go to Surabaya ? As a stopover between 2 train connections, to do shopping in "Asia's largest shopping center" Tunjungan Plaza " (for the ladies), and to refill on any depleted basics if needed. We have to say that the Novotel Surabaya was a nice surprise, with luxury bathroom, a large swimming pool and waterglide for the kids. The food served at their Jangalla Restaurant was a topper, large buffets for breakfast, large buffet with BBQ for diner. Yes BBQ! The barbequed fish is heaven - best we ever had ! There are 2 iMacs available in the lounge, which I used for a couple of hours to update the blog with the first text and images.
In the morning we went to Tunjungan Plaza. Impressive; four interconnected 6-floor buildings. Shop prices were between cheap for indonesian products and more expensive than in Belgium for imported brand products (eg Kipling handbags). We bought 2 jeans for Diewertje and a matching belt and socks for Sietse. A bit different from our way of shopping was that every article had to be payed independently; jeans here, belt there, although it was in the same shop. The young saleswomen did their best to help us and praise their articles, and probably the system involves some sort of commission. Ingriss spoke was not common and thus complicating conversation. But eventually we understood each other,or an english speaking person was sought. Also, the people were more mixed than in Yogja, with a chinese influence showing up. Needed badly was a haircut for Sietse, and Diewertje got a regular wash&dry with curls. Very beautiful and we found a lady just looking like her a bit later (see pictures). The 2 kids went to the hairdresser for about 7euro in total. Diewertje also got her nails done; hand painted flowers for 50.000Rp (=not even 5Euro). To ease the hunger we had a pizza at the Pizza Hut, and it was better quality than the Pizza Huts around Brussels. Anja wanted to look for some shoes, but her size was non-existing in the shoe-shops. Remarkably, even Diewertje's shoe size did not exist for the models she had chosen, and she has size 39 !
