Monday 2 July
We arranged transfer from the hotel to Yogja's Tugu train station. On the way, we visited the area of Mt. Merapi's 2010 eruption. Amazing that 2 yrs after the eruption the landscape is so green again. A few destroyed buildings are remaining, but life is picking up slowly again. Arriving at the staton we had lunch quickly, 4 Soto Ayam (at 10.000 Rppp). The best soups we had on our trip so far!
The Argo Wilis train rolled in on time and we boarded for a 4hr yourney. We had booked seats in EKSA (executive) class; the only class with AC and no touts passing through the cabin.
A photographic disadvantage in EKSA is that the windows are tinted; using a Canon EOS  550D this can be corrected by taking shots at +1 overexposure and setting the light source to cloudy. Set the exposure time to at least 1/500 if you want to have sharp photos, lower shutter speed to have the movement in your picture.
Landscapes passed by, road crossings, then rice fields. On the right was Mt. Bromo. It was a  nice break and a real feeling of voyage; "de trein is altijd een beetje reizen" as they say in Belgium. After some time, Sietse got a bit more active and started playing "kiekeboe!", first with the kid in front of us an then with the lady behind us. Her name was Jayna (or Jenna?) and was travelling with her parents. After a while, their play got some more interactive when she allowed Sietse to play on her iPad. They had so much fun ! As the train pulled into Surabaya Gubeng station, their play came to an end because we had to get ready.
A bluebird taxi drove us to the Novotel where we checked in (as a safe break from the tourist hotels) for 2 nights. We got upgraded again to a better room for free - nice!
