Merida is a lovely inland city in the Yucatan. It boasts some of the oldest colonial buildings in Mexico, as well as the largest indoor Christ-on-a-cross in the entire world. More impressive are the festive Meridians, who have live salsa and big-band dance bands playing for free in parks around the city nearly every evening. Not just for the tourists, the Meridians dance rhumba, tango, salsa, cha cha late into the night. We were very lucky in finding the Casa Alvarez Guest House, where we had a beautiful room with bath, and Senor and Senora Alvarez made us feel so at home. They even attended to Erik when he sprained his ankle jogging, bringing balms and offering to get a doctor for him, when he still had trouble walking after 2 days. We had access to the roof deck, where we would sip beer and watch the sunset each evening. We also met our (now) good friends, Sofi and Andrew, from Amsterdam. After hanging out together for a few days, we decided to do a tour of the local cenotes, which took all day, but was well worth the buses, tuk-tuks and "truk" we had to take as transportation. (A truk is a horse drawn mini railroad car which goes from cenote to cenote...)
