The trip started well, with Karen being "randomly" selected for a security screening at SFO. Funny that, her being British and all... She ended up in a separate line from me, having her daypack emptied and wiped for trace explosives. The best part though, was when they put her into the electronic sniffer, a high tech chamber that looks like nothing so much as an early version of the transporter from Star Trek, where she was hit with a couple blasts of air which the machine samples for illicit chemical signatures
Arriving at the Cancun airport, we quickly boarded a bus to downtown Cancun, where we hopped a ride to the ferry terminal in a 30 year old VW van taxi with a leaky exhaust, and then transferred to a catamaran for the ride to Isla Mujeres, a small island with a great Caribbean vibe just a couple miles off the coast. We ran around town with our backpacks, wilting in the heat while trying to find the cheapest possible accommodations. Sadly, all the truly cheap places were booked, so we've ended up at Casa Caribe Maya, where we're paying $25 a night for a double with fan, no A/C, and a broken toilet. Ah, the glamor of life on the road.
Our first day was all about rest, and day two not a lot different. We slept in, snorkeled for a couple hours at mid-day, stuffed ourselves with seafood and cervezas (1.25 for a Corona!), and not a lot more. We'll be back on the road tomorrow, heading for Vallodolid about 60 km inland, and not far from the Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza which weŽll see while weŽre there.
