We came to Belgrade after a 12 hour night train ride and about the lowest expectations possible. Now that we have arrived here and walked around town, we have decided to stay TWO DAYS. It was nothing like what I expected. I expected war ravaged, down trodden people and a run down town. It is everything I was thinking it was but reversed. The people are nice as can be and the town is surprisingly nice. Yeah, you are still in Serbia but it isn't nearly as bad as news reports and travel guides make it sound. The one downfall of the town so far is the insufferable heat. I have spent about 500 denar(Serbian not Macedonian Denar) so far on water and I will probably have to buy another couple hundred tonight. Luckily, the dollar to dinar ratio is pretty favorable for us so it doesn't hurt the pocketbook as much as it sounds.

I have only been in town for about 4 hours now and most of that time has been eating, on the internet, and searching for a hotel but tonight and tomorrow should be a good time. There is a beer festival here for the next 2 nights and it evidently draws about 15000 people so we are going to have a little pre-Octoberfest warmup here in Serbia. Tomorrow we are going to visit the largest Orthodox church in the world as well as a huge citadel that is on the hill overlooking the main city. If the beer festival isn't as cool as it sounds(and it sounds pretty cool) then we can always go down to the waterfront where they have 30 disco barges that have floating parties up and down the river. So what did you all do today in Arlington because I went to a Serbian beer festival and then floated down the river on a Serbian boat discoteche.

I just think it is a lot of fun to visit places and enjoy locations that very few other Americans visit. I had never planned on going to Macedonia and Ohrid was one of my favorite places so far. I never NEVER thought I would visit Serbia but Belgrade seems like a really nice town so far. I just hope that Ljublana lives up to its reputation as well because we are heading up there tomorrow night on another night train.
