Bremen

Not much going on in Bremen. We have learned that just about everything is closed on Sundays. We checked into our hostel which was clean and nice but not as cheap as advertised. It cost 17 Euro a night but that doesn't include the stuff that you have to rent. Blankets, sheets, showers, towels, lockers, internet, and just about anything else you can think of is a couple more Euros on top of everything else. What a sweet deal that is. I'm surpised they didn't make us pay for the air we breathed while in their hostel. We were to cheap to pay for blankets that night so we slept in our sleep sheets with the heat in the room turned up full blast. I wouldn't say we were comfortable but it was better than paying the 5 euro and hopefully their end of month electric bill is through the roof.
That night we walked around the nice downtown area and then had a magnificent German meal. We started with an interesting fish soup and then both had our main entree of thinly sliced beef stuffed with bacon, onions, and other good stuff and then it was topped with a dark beer sauce. Pair that up with a pint of the local dark beer and I was in heaven.
The problem with Bremen, other than the weak hostel, was that everything was closed. I mean everything. Outside of a church and some restaurants, everything was closed up. Evidently in Europe, as we have found out, everything is closed on Sundays. In France, it is actually law that everything is closed on Sundays(unless you have a special work permit). This means that all shops, grocery stores, bakeries, butcher shops, laundromates, and anything else that is open on Sundays in the US is closed. It really takes the fun out of walking around a city when there is nobody around and everything is closed. If nothing else, Bremen taught us this. Off to Amsterdam and their slightly different outlook on life.
