Hello.
Many people ask if I miss home. Especially when they hear I'm on an 18 month contract.
The answer is 'chua.' Especially when I can find it only 500 kilometers outside Saigon. Pine trees, strawberries, artichokes and best of all, 62 degree temps (17 celcius). That puts a smile on EVERY tourist's face. This past month temps have averaged 100+ degrees (40 celcius).
The French left many contributions to Vietnamese culture. I love eating the light, airy baguettes. The colorful architecture is aesthetically beautiful. The wide boulevards and circular roundabouts ease congestion in this crowded country. One of the universal favorites is Dalat.
Dalat is situated about 1,500 meters above sea level. It was originally designed as a retreat for French soldiers. Since then it has become popular with Vietnamese. Domestic tourism now supports over 600 guesthouses in this small town. Every Saigonese I've ever met wants to holiday most at Dalat. They can always remember how many times they've visited.
Right in the center of Dalat is a huge market. The largest room of produce I've ever seen. And, due to the mild climate, a selection of fruits, vegetables and spices not found in the rest of the country. Ever heard of artichoke tea? At first it sounded funny but now it's my favorite hot drink here.
Dalat is another of those small towns in a rural area. Not surprisingly, part of the charm is its warm-hearted people. So how do I spend my free time here? Wandering the market in search of new friends.
