Where I stayed
When we finally arrived in Vietnam it was 10pm (5hrs later than our ticket stated) and we were dropped in the middle of nowhere with just a few strange looking characters offering us a taxi on the back of their motorbikes. Not keen on the idea of having to travel separately but realising we had little choice we took up there offer. James sped off into the distance and luckily we followed … at some speed too! We cut up lorries and weaved in and out of cars and bikes, it was like some kind of race…as we pulled up to the hotel we both felt lucky to be alive...welcome to the Mekong Delta!
The following morning was a much slower pace with a slow cruise down the Can Tho River to the largest floating market in the world, it was really interesting to see the locals exchanging their home grown fruit and veg. We decided that the market must have been driven out of the city and on to the river by all the motorbikes (it can take quite a while just to cross the road!)
Can Tho is a relatively localised area, making it must more of a true Vietnamese experience. The food is a completely new adventure, breakfast consisted of meatballs (and bones) whilst dinner was a hotpot which arrived with mushrooms still sprouting (see pics)! The people here are surprised to see us funny looking Westerners, we have more than our fare share of stares and all the children wave and say hello! Heading to Ho Chi Minh tomorrow via a 4 hour bus journey ….we hope!
