So today we learned that it does indeed rain in Rome , but when it does
so it it still hotter than you could ever imagine.
Today was supposed to be a more relaxing day, but we don't really do
those... Anyway we had some work to do at the train station first. We
were to do some calling, then we were going to fund a train out of
town. This proved difficult as we never did find the tourist office.
So we opted fir a walk suggested by our pension.
We were headed for the old appian way - one of the oldest roads in the
world. We first passed what appeared to be a old pyramid - there are
monuments of all kinds everywhere you go there. We walk along the old
wall of Rome - it is strange as it is soft quiet there. We alto walked
by the baths of carcala which are from like the third century. We
didn't see the inside as we were running out of money!
We finally did make it to the appian way, but it wasn't at all as
expected! It was almost non-stop traffic moving at breakneck speed!
Romans drive like raving lunatics!!!! We were almost killed several
times before giving it up and hopping on a bus... (the road did look
super old though).
We wanted some ljmch so we grabbed some takeaway and headed for the
villa borghese - rome's largest park. It was strangely calm anyway...
Nice spot for lunch. We walked around a bit before hopping on a tram.
We had finally learned the miracle that is mass transit in Europe .
In the evening we wanted one last go at a nice dinner and such. We
first went to the Spanish steps again (fitting since we were going to
Spain ). This is the mega-upscale shopping districtof tome. Very nice!
But crowded as it is everywhere in Rome! We ended up walking again to
the piazza navona and had dinner at a little cafe just off it. Food
was awesome but the service was just awful. And Italy doesn't much do
credit cards... Then it started to pour and pretty much did so all
night. Rain in Rome???
All in all, Rome is probably what you make it. It was more than worth
seeing and maybe next time I would dig deeper and try to find a way to
get away from the crowds and the incessant traffic....
Hola! Spain is next!
