Today we opted for transit passes (€4) - good deal, I think! Btw -
nobody takes credit in Rome , bring cash!
So we took the metro to St. Peter's bascilica. The square in front is
absolutely huge! There are people everywhere. It is surrounded by
great columns of stone. And at the end stands the great cathedral of
the Vatican city. We eventually make our way inside - and all we can
say is "wow"! It's just spectacular. The ceiling seems to be miles up!
And to walk across the floor is to walk on the same place as so many
popes have done before. It, of course, contains numerous monuments to
thf great leaders of the catholic faith as well. But the most amazing
part is to see the people from all corners of the globe who have come
to see this special place. Amazing.
Next it was on to the vatican museum - home to the sistine chapel .
There is more art in this place than you could possibly imagine.
Everything from ancient sculptures to modern art , and everything in
between. And there is lots between! All the walls and ceilings are
painted with great murals. Several rooms were completely painted by
rafael himself (commissioned by the pope). After an hour or more of
rooms filled with art, we findlly arrive at the Sistine chapel! It is
filled to the brims with people just standing I'm awe of the place (no
pictures)-it was really amazing to see the work that went into this
place. Hard to really describe!
After this we took it easy a bit - just browsed a bit and such. Went
back to the hotel for a bit of a rest. But since it was our last big
night we went back out (after mastering the buses) and checked out
another cool area: Travestere. Very nice indeed - similar but unique
as well.
One more day in Rome but it's off to bed for now.
