We wake to find nice, sunny skies!!! This is awesome because we now
will make the trip up the schilthorn - to about 10,000 ft! It's a bit
pricey ($85 with the railpass) but in the end more than worth it.
The trip up the mountain involved several trains and cable cars - the
Swiss seem very good at both. First we take the train from interlaken
up Lauerbrunnen - and we finally see snow-capped peaks! It really is
lovely - complete with a waterfall. Next we switch to a cable car that
takes us up another 1000ft or so. Then a train completes the trip to
murren - which was really awesome. No cars there at all and it's way
up high - still rather unspoiled. Breathtaking!
From murren, you board the last set of cable cars that will take you
up to the schilthorn. This is just shy if 10,000 feet. Words can't
describe it - you are sitting on the edge of a mountain with high
peaks all around. There is nothing like it.Incidentally this is where
one of the older Bond films took place so there is 007 stuff all
around. There is also, of course, a revolving restaurant at the very
top. We even met some nice folks from PA up there!
On the way down we had a bit of a picnic lunch in murren. Very nice
spot. Easily the best lunchtime scenery of the trip (and that includes
Sweden ).
We also did a bit of a hike to the nice waterfall I mentioned earlier
- it was actually a cascade of water running over the edge of the
canyon. My pictures won't do it justice!
Well, tomorrow we leave nature behind for the bussle of Italy !
