Arvid's (Rob's friend) house is amazingly nice so after a good nights rest and a good
breakfast we head off for Munich. We take the S-Bahn commuter line
directly to the city center. I must say these Germans really have mass
transit down to a science! Always on time too.
The weather isn't looking too hopeful but we head right into the
center of Munich in the hopes it will get better. As we emerge from
the railway station we are met with a bit of rain but nothing we
couldn't handle. The city itself I'd probably bigger than I might have
expected. There is once more shopping everywhere- many mainstream
stores along with the tourist shops. It was very busy as well. The
entire center is totally a pedistrian area, which is great for our
type of siteseeing. We manage to take lots of pics of all the main
sites. Arvid is an awesome tour guide! We visited the three sisters
church which I'd in the romantic style and was quite impressive -
reminded me a bit of John the baptist in. NYC. We apparently just
missed the glockenspeil on the main square but the architecture was
rather impressive anyway. We also passed through the hofbrauhaus - a
major beer garden Bavaria type place. It was just as you might imagine
it!
Probably the highlight of Munich (for me anyway) was the English
gardens . This I'd an amazing park -- bigger than even Hyde or central
park, I guess. What I lived about it was that there were trees just
about everywhere, almost like a forest. And there were even surfers! I
guess Hawaii is a bit far? We intended to cap it off with a rather
traditional beer garden experience, however due to the weather (which
had actually turned nice by now) they were mostly just serving beer
and these little pork sandwiches.
The day wasn't over yet! It was on to the Olympic park and bmw world
(welt). BMW world was huge - they had every sort of vehicle (that they make anyhow)
you can think of there. It seems this is also where one picks ip their new
1series (for example), which was way high-tech! The building was a
great contrast with the older city center.
Our last stop was the Olympic tower where we could get a great
overview of the city. The tower was built for the (unfortunately)
infamous olympics of 1972. It is about 300m high and you can see all
of the Munich area from there. Quite impressive! I'm not entirely sure
why these towers were built but this was the second one of the trip.
Anyway after about a million pictures it was time to return to arvid's
home for a rather nice home-cooked meal. And more beer, of course! Ah,
and german chocolate!!! Nothing to complain about there! ;)
Next up is the neuschwanstein castle in the Bavarian alps!
