We were so happy that our hotel in Alleghe had some modern comforts that we had not enjoyed in a while - internet connection and English speaking TV channels. We were finally able to get caught up with emails and world news.
Alleghe is part of the Civetta Ski Region... southeast of Val Gardena and right outside the Sella Ronda trail. We really enjoyed skiing here because of the lack of crowds, the extensive snow making (all areas were well covered) and the wonderfully groomed trails
We celebrated Valentine's Day here - interesting that although the Italians recognize the holiday it is not the huge hallmark event we're used to in the US... prices for restaurants the same as any other day and you didn't even need to make dinner reservations ahead of time!
During our week in Alleghe we attempted to visit Cortina D'Ampezzo which was only 20 miles from where we were staying. Cortina is considered Italy's most exclusive ski resort (something like Vail or Aspen in the US) and we thought it would be fun to go there for lunch one day. However the roads to Cortina were among the worst we have encountered yet... about half way through the trip our car simply refused to go up anymore steep/windy/ icy/snowy roads. We knew that the time had come to turn around when the wheels were spinning forward but we were rolling backwards. A visit to Cortina will have to wait for another time - probably in the summer (if ever) since we really do prefer skiing in Austria over Italy.
