Let me first start by saying the red-eye from Perth-Melb-Hobart is brutal especially if you plan to jump in a car for 5 hours. Let me re-iterate...I do NOT suggest this, even if you aren't driving for so long (let me explain in a bit).  We were all left tired and worse for wear.

This was a family trip for my parents and myself, a quick little jaunt to little Tassie to check out this wonderful wilderness I've often heard about.

Now in the past I don't think I would have considered myself a planner.  But somewhere along the way, I've decided that the shorter the trip the more important it was to plan out.  Thus, for this 5-day tour of Tassie, I felt it utterly imperative that I sort the plans to the finest details.  I think I may have already outlined the itinerary for the trip in a previous entry but one aspect that I had hoped to hit was a short stop in the town of Bothwell between our Hobart to Strahan drive.

I once saw an episode of Getaway where they talked about Bothwell, something along the lines of the oldest golf course in Australia (or outside of Scotland, something like that) and one of the few distilleries in the nation, Nant Distillery.  Anyway, while planning the trip I thought I could stop at the distillery and my pops could taste and maybe purchase a bit a single malt scotch.

It wasn't to be...

We picked up our rental Renault which had a built in GPS nav system...brilliant I thought as i tossed the paper directions to the side.

Needless to say, either the lack of sleep or inept ability with the man of the dash ,Tom (navi system) we somehow ended up splitting Tas on our way to Launceston. This unfortunate adventure cost us several extra hours to Strahan and completely bypassed Bothwell, damn I was looking forward to wearing plaid golfing pants.

In hindsight however, it was probably best that our exhausted bodies and depleted minds were not dimmed further by the sweet taste of peat moss smoked malts.  I can only imagine the weight of our eyelids after just a few drops of that golden warmth in a bottle.

What I can say about the journey is that we stopped at a nice little cafe in Campbell Town for a nice cuppa and a lite lunch.  Maybe not as good as scotch but probably kept us alive.  Here are a couple photos from the first day.
