e left beautiful Nelson this morning amidst glorious sunshine and blue skies and the hope that it would turn out to be a great day and that it would warm up slightly! We headed out to the Nelson Lakes National park to have a picnic lunch by a lake - it was so lovely, the nicest place I've had lunch so far, a beautiful lake with the backdrop of huge mountains with snow on the top with their reflection shimmering in the water. Some of the crazier members of the bus decided to jump on in for a swim - they were gonna jump off the jetty into the lake but when we arrived the jetty was actually underwater because they have had so much rainfall over the last few days so they waded out to the end of the jetty and launched themselves into the freezing cold water! madness if ever I've seen it!!
We had quite a few new people join the bus both yesterday and today and some of them are great but there's a group of girls and a group of lads who don't want to mingle with the rest of us - far too common, they all have law degrees - they don't actually know any law other than what the text book told them but they seem to think that that makes them better than the rest of us - perhaps tomorrow I'll tell them what I do for a living
so after the lake lunch we were headed for a town called Westport which is on the west coast of the south island. On the way there Flea told us stories about the areas and how people never really move out of the small towns along the west coast and consequently people ended up marrying their brothers/sisters/cousins/aunts etc and so the towns are full of inbreds who look like they aren't quite the ticket - she even set us a challenge - the person who gets the best photo of an inbred gets to do a free canyon swing in Queenstown (not sure what a canyon swing entails but I'm sure its not gonna be something that I wanna do!!) so the challenge was set!!
I did horse trekking today with an organisation called Bullers - it was so unbelieveable rubbish all we did was plod along on horse that were like robots and just walked along with their heads down and stopped whenever they felt like it to eat and all we walked through was boggy mud and bushes so there wasn't even any view. Half the horses looked emaciated and they were dirty and not well kept at all. I wouldn't recommend that anyone go trekking there unless you want the most boring two hours of your life!! To top it all off they would only let us walk the horses, we trotted for about 2 seconds and then they let 4 people who had never been on a horse before gallop wildly across a field
We arrived in Westport early evening and the place was like a ghost town - not an inbred in sight. Its a pretty small grotty place and I very much doubt there is much to do here except get drunk and get stoned! Hence the large number of inbreds I guess. The lower level of the group went to the pub this evening, in search of the photo of course whilst the upper level sat around the dining room table chatting nicely. Pubs was groovy but didn't see anyone who looked wierd enough to win the competion but I guess I have the whole of the west coast to go.....
Hostel - Basil's place which is pretty nice
