Arrived in Auckland yesterday afternoon to the greeting of a huge Thunderstorm and great fork lightning - shame that the ran had to come with it though especially when I only have flip flops (they call them Jandals here - WHY!) and no coat!! I had planned to invest in trainers and a coat here rather than carry them half way round the world with me but I thought I'd just need them for the glaciers not for my immediate arrival!! Still first impression of Auckland (minus the rain) were good -they have houses built from brick here!! and it reminded me of England (well based on the drive from the airport).
Staying at the YHA Hostel which is really nice - they have loads of information on what to do and where to go etc which is groovy and picked up loads of reading material to keep me amused for the night.
Had a wander through Queen Street today which is two minutes from the hostel and is the main CBD/Shopping area in the city and as I decided to book the Kiwi Expereince this morning (bonus was that it cost me $900 instead of $1300 - YHA membership was certainly worthwhile) I thought that I should buy some hiking boots and a waterproof jacket (as advised) so this morning was just shopping and wandering.
Met up with Bex this afternoon and she took me out to a place called Mission Bay where we got some chips but unfortunately it was raining so instead of eating them on the beach we had to eat them in the car but it wasa really pretty place and we went up to the view point (which I've forgotten the name of!! - sorry Bex) and thats where some of the pictures are from then we drove back into the city and out again over the auckland bridge and back again which is where the pictures of the Auckland skyline are from - moaned about the rain but the clouds actually look quite funky!!
So what I do tomorrow depends pretty much on the weather - if its sunny then I'm gonna take Bex's advice and catch the ferry over to Devonport which is a pretty little town over the harbour. I wanna go down to the viaduct whateva and have a look round..... praying for sun or at least no rain.
