I'm finding it really hard to be positive about this place - I mean it is beautiful in its own way but there really is nothing to do. The beaches aren't what I'd call great I've seen much nicer beaches in spain, infact the beach in Magaluf makes the beaches here look awful - yeah there's palm trees and pretty flowers but its seems like its lost its culture and just become a holiday island for people from New Zealand. The only time I've actually seen anything of what the Cook Islands is really about is when I went to the Island night and saw the traditional dancing and the traditional dress but that was a show - i've been hard pushed to actually see any people who are from The Cooks (apart from the two ladies that work on the hillside) most of the shops in town seem to be run by people who have moved here from New Zealand. I think maybe I should have either looked at seeing some of the other islands or had less time here but again hindsight is such a great thing!
Its easy to summarise the cook islands like that but I have only been on Rorotonga - there are 14 other islands which are probably very different but its really expensive to get to them ($400 NZD return) which is without any accomodation and there are no backpackers on the other islands just private huts) -the pictures of Atitakui look really good but its just another island with beaches and sea and I think that thats really not my scene I need something to do!! Sand and Beaches are okay for a while! - not for 10 long days though!
I think I was expecting it to be like Fiji - wasn't too keen on the whole island thing there either but it wasn't quite as boring as here, at least there were other people around!!
So 4 more days to go............
Oh yeah and the stray cat which had adopted the backpackers as her home had 4 little kittens just before I arrived.. she moved them into the living room behind the sofa and at first they were quite boring what with being blind and all but now they're moving about and making loads of noise and all their eyes are open and they all have bright blue eyes and i've pretty much been mesmerized by them - check the pictures!
