After such a long day yesterday I figured that I would take it easy today, have a lie in and then head down to the strip later - no such luck - housekeeping were banging on the door at 9.00am, do they not realise this is a hostel - its not supposed to be clean!!!

I did manage to sleep again though and finally headed down to the strip about lunch time - god knows what the temperature was here today but it was hot so walking in the full sun wasn't an option. I took the bus down to the strip. Thats the one downside of this hostel. Its on Fremont street but not even near the famous bit (thats nine blocks north) and the area is pretty dodgy so walking is something thats not an option either even during the day. But the buses are cheap and efficient and air conditioned!

I decided to go right down to the heart of the strip and jumped off at Treasure Island. I had in my head that I'd get most of the hotels done today - Yeah right! They are sooo huge that even walking through then takes at least an hour and thats without stopping to look at anything. Treasure Island was pretty groovy, the most impressive bit is outside where they do the nightly shows of Pirate fights (went tonight and waited an hour so I had a really good spot and it got cancelled cos the wind was too high and they use lots of fire and stuff so it would have been too dangerous, I was so gutted - fingers crossed for tomorrow!)

After that I went to The Mirage - wow! I was impressed with the outside which has huge waterfalls and lakes but the inside is amazing, there is a tropical garden area (I'm not 100% sure but I think the flowers were fake) and of course this is the hotel which is associated with Siegfried and Roy (don't think they do a show anymore though after one of them was mauled by their beloved tame tigers!) but they do run the Dolphin Enclosure and Secret Garden (which costs $15 to get in even though its advertised in some places as free). It was really good though - they research and breed bottle nose dolphins and they have a 3 month old baby dolphin called Sgt Pepper. I spent about an hour just watching him and his mum playing and jumping out of the water. They aren't trained dolphins so there are no shows but one of the research team gets in the pool with them both every hour to play with them and generally check them over and they seemed to love that interaction, well mum did the baby was more interested in zooming round the pool as fast as possible.

They also have the white tigers which they are most famous for. I walked through to the Secret Garden bit and there were two white lions in an enclosure with the bluest eyes I have ever seen. I didn't know they actually existed so I kinda thought they were fake until one moved. They actually took my breath away they were so beautiful! two males and they were absolutely huge much bigger than any lions I have seen before. It was well worth the $15 to get in even though its pretty small and the enclosures for the lions and tigers (they also have a black panther) are really small (so well done but just small) I asked one of the guides about it and apparently Siegfried and Roy have a huge place outside of Vegas where they run a breeding program and the animals are moved between the two. The idea of the whole place is to educate people about these endangered species.

Caesars Palace in another amazing hotel - You just wouldn't believe that they could design hotels like this. It has a huge shopping centre inside and loads of greek statues and fountains and paintings/murals everywhere.

The final hotel was The Venetian and I think this was probably the best one so far. Its Italian (obviously) and there are canals which run all around the outside and all through the hotel with Gondalas on which you can ride (for a price of course) The whole place downstairs is set up like an Italian Street with shops and restaurants and then upstairs in the lobby the ceilings are decorated with artwork and gold - it was so beautiful!

And thats pretty much all I did! Didn't get back to the hostel til 10.30pm so in all the time I was on the Strip I only saw 4 hotels!! Tomorrow I'm moving to the Imperial Palace for some luxury for one night and so i'll be able to stay out later and not have to worry about last buses etc. I'm struggling to find the time to update this thing so the entries might lapse a bit! but I'll keep doing them just maybe not daily!
