Flag of France  , Brittany,
Saturday, February 20, 2010

We caught the 9 AM train in Paris, which in itself was a feat. We had maybe three times more baggage than anyone else on the train. People sitting across from us were giving us strange looks as we tried to find space for our luggage. Since the baggage racks were full, we had to stack them in the aisle. Nobody on board was impressed with that. The woman across from us kept whispering to her husband in french about how much luggage we had.

After a five hour uneventful ride, we arrived in Brest, Brittany on the west coast of France. We found our rental car, and with much cussing and yelling we squashed our bags into the tiny car. Val was a little upset when she discovered she needed to pay 20 cents to use the bathroom. Two ten cents didn't work, you need exact change!

We bought a map that nobody could read, and yet we miraculously made it Douarnenez without one wrong turn. Once we got out of Brest and onto the right freeway, it was an easy task to follow the signs that said Douarnenez.

Upon our arrival, it was late in the afternoon, and raining. We tried to use a payphone to call our landlady, but it didn't accept change. We ended up walking down the street looking for what one shop owner had called a telephone card (telecarte), which you used to make a call. After we found out our landlady was waiting for us at the house, we drove around the tiny streets, nearly crashed into other cars a few times, got lost....and finally found 24 rue du Coulinec.

Our landlady, Jacqueline, was very nice and gave us a tour of our lovely new home. She showed us how everything worked and where everything was. After she left us we hauled our luggage upstairs and unpacked. We found a little grocery store where we bought some hasbrowns and eggs for breakfast and made a call to Gina, Todd's wife to make plans for tomorrow morning.

We ate the sandwiches we had bought for the train back in Paris and were in bed by 8:30 PM

Granny O on

Sounds like you've been having a very eventful time. Maybe now your in your new little home you can settle in and relax a bit. Glad your luggage all went in the car and you didn't have to pull any of it behind. Those wheels may not have kept up that good ha! By now your likely getting ready for bed over there. And I'm getting ready to make supper. Love to all Granny & Gramps.
