After I found out that my period working for the government was finishing sooner than anticipated, I started planning to go to Tassie, as I'd heard so many good things about it. Amanda, who's been a really good friend to me lately, introduced me to her friend Jennifer from Nebraska, who's let me stay with her for a week rent-free. Sweet!
Orginally from Nebraska, US, Jennifer's intelligent, sophisticated and extremely funny. She is physically very attractive but very calm about it all. She dotes on Roxy, a ragdoll cat who, for those that don't know what this kind of cat looks like, looks a little like a Persian cat, long-haired, light blue eyes, beautiful cream and mocha fur. Roxy and Jennifer adore one another. One day I got a call from Jennifer saying that she had VIP tickets to see Varekai, the Cirque de Solei performance! Of course I said yes and we enjoyed a wonderful night out with free drinks at the after party (the tickets were first intended for her CEO and were perks of corporate hospitality). It was a spectacular night - one lady who was entertaining us surprised me by her forceful hostessing. Jen had asked me to hold her glass of wine and I had done so. I started talking to someone and the hostess appeared. 'Are you ok? I can take that,' she said pointing to the glass. 'No, its ok I'm fine thanks,' I replied smiling. The smiling must have alerted her to an opportunity soon to be missed. She literally pryed it out of my hand so she could give it to Jennifer!! Crazy. When I told Jen about it she said, 'She's done hardcore hostessing too long. She used to work in Sydney, don't worry about it.' I wonder what Sydney will be like!
Mayuri, my old flatmate who came to collect me the day I got evicted, called to tell me there had been a scabies outbreak in her house and to get checked out by the doctor. The doctor looked at me and told me I didn't have the symptoms, but I asked for a prescription to treat it anyway. I told Jennifer and dry-cleaned the duvet, sheets and doona (or duvet to the Brits) she'd lent me, just in case. I hoovered the house twice, and washed all my clothes and sleeping bag after I completed the treatment - the thought of a parasite living off you is so disgusting I'm pretty sure you'd have done the same. In all the excitement happening lately, I missed Michell's 17th birthday, which was on 15th April. He was sympathetic when I told him about my Grandfather's death and didn't bring it up that I'd actually missed his birthday. I wired him some money and I hope he can get some good trainers with it that he wants.
After a fun day at the seaside with Adam, we exchanged leaving presents: me to him, a card with a small novel written in it, plus copies of all the better photos I'd taken while I'd been there. He gave me a lovely amber necklace and told me about the healing properties - amber balances the emotions, and should ideally be worn over the heart. Its also really pretty :) On Monday I flew in to Hobart, Tassie and saw lots of beautiful starfish in the harbour. The people are great here and I'm really enjoying myself. I went to Port Arther today and looked around the world famous convict colony ruins. Its an interesting place and it was nice to sit in the gardens with the brightly coloured parakeets/budgies? feeding on the fruit of the trees around me.
Tomorrow, I leave for Bicheno, a special place where you can go to see the Fairy Penguins waddle in to the beach at night from the sea. More thumbnails ...
