Chiang Mai Zoo turned out to be an extremely large place. We opted not to pay the additional 40 Baht fee for a tram service at the entrance, thinking that the attractions would be close together. How we were wrong :), but the weather was beautiful, so it wasn't all bad. The star attractions for us were the Pandas, Hippos, Gibbons and Giraffes, unfortunately the orangutans were hiding, but we will get to see them in a few months in Borneo.
It was great fun taking photos and we both felt like children again, standing and staring in awe. Emma's favourite animals were the Pandas and Giraffes, while mine were the Gibbons, although my pictures do make some of the animals look rather sad, not intentional on my part. One of the funniest attractions at the zoo was a snow zone, giving the Thai people an opportunity to come face to face with artificial snow. That must be a real shock for them!
Next up was Doi Suthep. A tuk tuk service was in operation outside the zoo taking groups of people to the Wat. The only stipulation was that we had to wait for it to be full before leaving. The windy road to the top was making me feel a little travel sick so I shut my eyes and actually fell asleep for a brief period, wow I can truely sleep anywhere. Once at the top, all that was left between us and the Wat was 300 steps!
The temple was beautiful. Nestled among the clouds, the view to Chiang Mai below was spectacular. The outside of the complex was decorated with beautiful trees, ornaments and Buddhist figures. The inner sanctum housed a gold chedi surrounded by four golden umbrellas. Bells were hung by visitors along the roof line for good luck, it gave the place an enchanting atmosphere.
Not long after we arrived, dark clouds started to roll in from the horizon and it didn't look good. We took it as a sign to leave so headed back to the tuk tuk and waited for the remainder of the group to return before we headed back to town. The remainder of the day was spent by the pool relaxing, drinking beer and eating peanuts!
