Greetings from Gulungyu island!

I (EW) am better woohoo! The evil cold has pretty much gone, although I spent a couple of days feeling pretty miserable. When we left Hangazhou in the morning of the 25th it was still throwing it down with rain, its a shame really becuase it really is a beautiful place but events seemed to conspire against us there to make it not so good, between the apalling weather, snoring blokes, being abandoned in the rain, dodgy computers, being cold and having colds it wasn't the best few days. Ah well its all part of the fun.

The train ride was quite uneventful, we had bottom bunks which was good as we could sit up in the daytimes, the train was also really empty, none of the bunks above the bottom ones were full in our carriage, which was very nice as it does get a bit cozy when all the beds are filled. We woke up on the day of emmas birthday and had our own little celebration, I had bought her a small tripod as she loved Toms when he was around, and shes a big fan of timer switch function so she appreciated it. When we arrived in Xiamen it was HOT! Actually thats a bit of an exaggeration but it was definitely warmer and wearing our ski jackets with our bags on defintely brought us out in a bit of a sweat. We found our bus that we needed and journed the mile or two to the ferry port as we had decided to stay on the island for a couple of nights. Now, we knew the ferry was going to be very cheap. In fact the LP bible told us that its actually free for the 10 minute ferry ride on the lower deck. So in our inifinite wisdom we just went through to the first ferry we found, we were also a bit confused when they charged us 15 yuan (1 pound 50) but anyway we sat down and the ferry left. And then went past the ferry port on the island... We then realised we had got on a sightseeing boat and was taking a cruise round the island. Which would have been ok but we really wanted to get to the hostel and have a shower. So 45 minutes later we landed on the island, at the wrong ferry port so we to walk for ages with our bags. But anyway we found the place in the end and got our shower. Theres no westerners here at the moment apart from one huuuuuuuge middle aged, slightly deaf, canadian women who enjoys (a very extensive) chat with us. But its nice enough (save for the few ants I keep finding crawling around on my bed)

The island itself is pretty cool, its about 2km square and we walked it in an afternoon, there are no cars/bicycles/motorbikes whatsoever, only some electric golf cart things and the locals use these handcarts to move stuff around which is pretty awesome, see the pic. There are some beaches and its all old colonial style and really nice just to wander around.
We celebrated Emmas bday by having a few beers and watching a film after our trek round the island. Today we just wandered round some more, and sorted out a place to stay on the mainland for a couple of days.

All in all its been a nice peaceful couple of days compared to all the issues we had in Hangzhou, so we've been relaxing and appreciating the lack of rain.

Until next time :)
