We hoped on an overnight train from Vietnam into China where we met the only two other westeners on the train Zuzana & Pirkko,  who were teaching in Bejiing. They were teaching Slovak and FInish to the Chinese!! We asked why on earth the Chinese would want to learn Slovak and Finish and the two woman admitted they had wondered that themselves for the first year they had worked at the University. It was only later that they realised they were probably training spies!!

We were taken off the train at 1.00am to go through border control and then we made our way into China to a town called Nanning. Nanning is a very small town by Chinese standards as it only has 10million people!!!

China was very disorientating at first. You cannot understand any signs etc. Even trying to find a coffee shop was difficult as you have no idea what anything is. But we both loved it as soon as we arrived

We headed out for a wander around the town. The first thing we noticed was that everyone stared at us, nudged each other, giggled or pointed! It was very funny. The people were lovely and just seemed to be fascinated by the two aliens that had just arrived, by all accounts not many westerners go to Nanning!

On the pavement we saw a hamster in a cage and a man with a sign which had various pests with a cross through them! We moved closer to see what it was. The mans face lit up when he saw us and he started to show us his contraption. He plugged a device in and to our horror the hamster started leaping about as if it was being electrocuted! We both shouted "STOP" and the bemused man unplugged the device and the hamster went back to normal! He couldn't understand why we didn't like his pest removal display. We said goodbye to him and walked a further 100meters.

A man then walked towards us holding the leg of a tiger. It still had its fur and some tendons. He kept saying "tiger claw good" and wafting the leg at us. We declined and carried on walking. There were a further 5 people clutching tigers Legs!! It was clear that China was going to be a pretty unusual place!
