The road back to the Tanami didin't seem as bad this morning - perhaps one side of the road was better? or maybe having had a sleep helped us to cope.
The Tanami deteriorated - not only did we have corrugations, but now there were washouts at the side and then it would lull you by having a smooth section suddenly broken up by large potholes which you came upon very suddenly. Not a good idea to hit them at speed! This continued until we passed the entrance to Ruby Downs station (about 40kms from the end) where the condition improved dramatically. Don't know why - maybe the owner knows someone? But we were pleased.
Finally we reached the end of the Tanami!! We cheered. Turned right onto the bitumen and drove 17kms to Hall's Creek. This is a predominately aboriginal town. It was a small, nicely maintained little town. We went to the Mobil service station to get fuel - but they didn't have any and sent us to the other servo - a Shell station. We filled up and needed to put air in the tyres as we had been running at a lower pressure on the dirt. Couldn't find the air pump and when we asked they said "No we don't have one, but the Mobil does". So back to Mobil to get air. This seems pretty typical of the outback types - Shell has fuel but no air, Mobil has air but no fuel.... ah well.
We then had a delightfully smooth ride on the bitumen for 228kms to Fitzroy Crossing. A bigger town, but not by a great deal. We stayed at the Fitzroy Crossing Lodge campsite. This was really nice. Big open grassy area, lots of large shade trees well maintained facilities. Treated ourselves to dinner at the lodge.
