So since August I've seen a few trees, seen them fallen over, new ones growing, some clearly cleared for new agriculture, some I can't name, some I haven't asked about but I've been surrounded just the same.
What do they mean to me now? Well they are my friends really. They are very happy to see me and in the wind wave hello as I pass by. They shade me in the sun and when we've been in the cold they have provided heat and shelter. In Asia the trees are very essential to peoples lives. I think they still are in Europe but we may have forgotten about it, in a direct way at the moment.
I've found it really hard to get to grips with wood and the only carving I've done is of a pumpkin for halloween in Lijiang. John actually had some carving chisels which I looked at longingly at for a while - I really miss my woodwork. It's not enough to see other people's work I need to do some myself. Maybe I haven't tried hard enough or been in the wrong place but I haven't found anyone who can teach me either woodcarving or more cabinet making....We are heading to the coast for the first time in about 4 months so I'm hoping that my re-connection with the sea will enable me to find something to work on there. We also have found it difficult to stay put for longer than a week for our entire trip and that makes it difficult too. Lots of cookery, meditation and massage courses but nothing for the woodworking. For anyone reading this in Asia who has skills in woodwork please start up some courses for us woodwork folk!
