We got up early today, packed our swimwear and headed for the eastern portion of the island. The first stop on our little excursion was to the Wufengchi Waterfalls which at first looked as a giant Taiwanese gathering, but once we got past the crowds we realized the falls were not a myth. There were three sets of falls of which we were able to reach two and after an hour long hike up the mountain we gave up on the third. Once exercise was over we headed up north along the coast line admiring the rocky coastline. One thing is for sure Taiwan has not been able capitalize on their beautiful shoreline. Often times the little villages located right on the water are run down and very few if any resorts can be found. I suspect in the years to come Taiwan will begin investing in coastline development because there truly is a lot to offer. The drive along the Pacific Ocean brought us to Fulung best known for its beach. The sand beach its self if very nice, however lifeguards expect swimmers to stay within a roped-off swimming area reaching a staggering depth of ... two feet?!?! CULTURAL FACT: Taiwanese are not much of water people and swimming is definitely not their forte, but I think they deserve a bit more challenge than the allowed depth. As for Igor and I, we boycotted the swimming area and went into the deeper area before being chased back to shoreline by a lifeguard boat. During our trip east we could not avoid visiting a temple since they are plentiful all over the island.
