Mérida!! So much have happened in these last two weeks since we left San Cristóbal. On the 18th January early morning we arrived to Mérida with the overnight bus. It was nice to be back to the sun again. We went straight to Nomadas hostel where we had booked in for two nights before getting our apartment. We had two quiet days at the hostel catching up with Olivia, an Australian girl also staying in Mérida to live. She was waiting to hear about an apartment that was currently under construction by the owner of the house. Unfortunately she was to discover that rushing does not happen in Mexico, or at least not in Yucatan. At least she was luckier with finding work, she already got a job in a school in the mornings and in an English school on Saturday mornings. Having all afternoons off! That's life!

Well, we got going with sending CVs like crazy and also checking apartment ads, since we had only rented the Nomadas apartment for a month, we need to find something more permanent after that.

On the Friday we moved into our Nomadas apartment, it was so nice to finally be able to unpack the backpack and feel at home somewhere. We couldn’t ask for a better landlady, Cecilia, she is the mother in law of the owner/ manager at Nomadas hostel. She has really been looking after us since we arrived, always ready to help out with directions and even got us organic free range eggs. She really is a sweetheart. There is just one thing that bothers us with the place, we are right across the road from the big sports stadium in town. Not problem with that really, and great if you want to exercise since they also have different types of classes and a running track anyone can use. The one class we are not so keen on is the 07.30am every day but Sunday aerobics class. The put the music on full blast and it has been our alarm clock since we arrived. Not so bad if you need to get up to work anyway, but we are not working yet!!!

We caught up with Celine, a German girl we met in Tulum, once we got to Mérida and she has been great to us. Always inviting us along to get to know new people and has introduced us to her lovely flatmates as well. So far we have been exploring Mérida’s bars/ cafes and restaurants to find our favourites. We have also tried to see as many of the cultural events as we can. Since they are still celebrating the 470th anniversary of Mérida, there are lots of free cultural events. Such as theatre, dance performances and music performances every single night. We have also got in touch with Save the Children in Yucatan. They have an office here is Mérida and we are volunteering with them this Thursday. They need volunteers to "sell" kisses and hugs in various points of the city from the 1st to the 14th Feb. Each kiss or hug will cost 10 pesos and the money collected will go to one of their projects in one of the indigenous villages close to Valladolid, where they have a very high number of malnutrition within the children. I am really looking forward to “selling” kisses and hugs on Thursday and I’m planning to speak to the organiser to see what else I can do with Save the Children in my spare time. Since at the moment I still have a lot of spare time.

So far I had 3 interviews and they all went well, the last one was this afternoon and I really want this particular job. It is as Sales Manager for one of the nice hotels in the city centre, it is a small boutique hotel and they want to set up a small reservations department. They want someone to be the Sales Manager and take care of the commercial contact with the companies and travel agencies they work with. And also get more presence on the web, working with Tripadvisor, different booking engines and meta search engines. The person would also be responsible for the reservations team and general overview and training of reservations and reception. They say they have one more candidate in mind but already called me back for Friday for a second interview, so fingers crossed!!!

So far we haven’t seen any apartment/ house that we are delighted with, however we have decided to share with Olivia, which I am really happy about. Together we can get something nicer and bigger. We are searching the streets every day since many people do not advertise online or in the papers, they just put a sign on the building saying to rent and the telephone number to contact. That seems to be the way here……

Yesterday they opened a Frida Kahlo exhibition in town, it will be around until the 30th April so we will definitely check that out, and the most amazing thing is that it is for free!!!

This passed Sunday we had so much fun, every Sunday they close off one lane of the road from the main square (Calle 60) and all the way along Paseo Montejo which is like the posh street in town. Then everyone rents bicycles and can bicycle along the whole route. We rented some bikes for 2 hours with Celine and her flatmates, Baruka and Lance, and had so much fun. In the evening they invited us to their house for dinner and we had homemade falafel/ veggie burgers and their terrace. It was really lovely and I brought some home made hummus.

I have to admit that I sometimes miss Madrid, I don’t do unemployed very well and get easily bored just applying for jobs and searching for houses. I need to just learn to relax a bit and enjoy having some free time. For now we have a nice apartment until the end of February and all the time in the world to search for work. A funny thing we have noticed here is that they often call you the same day for an interview. Like today, they called me at 3pm for an interview at 5pm. With some things they don’t rush at all but with this they work very fast! I don’t know what to do with the blog now…. Do I keep writing even though we are not travelling anymore or do I put an end to the travel blog and get a new general blog…. I’ll think about it…. But I think I will keep on blogging, it is kind of nice just getting things written down.
