Went to bed very full but tired. Some very kind tourists bundled in the hotel at 3.30am making as much noise as they could I think literally shouting at each other. Despite protests from other guests they carried on regardless. Staff did nothing so would def not recommend Hostel Central in Latacunga!
Fortunately managed to get back to sleep and up next morning to walk to the terminal to get our bus to Quito on the Pan American Highway. Skies a bit misty today but still lovely and sunny. Views on the bus of Cotopaxi and other volcanoes were still amazing and went dead close to them.
We were approaching the sprawl of Quito and Dave got carried away thinking we were there and tried to get off the bus in some outskirt town. The conductor kindly stopped him before we ended up staying in the Basildon equivalent of Quito. Arrived at Quito´s terminal which is dead close to the centre of town and then got el trole or a trolley bus to our hostel. We are staying in the old town of Quito this time as didnt like Mariscal (new town) last time. Mariscal is basically were 90% of tourists stay as all hotels and restaus and bars but it has a really anonymous and scary feel to it as a result we think. Anyway get off the trole and walk to our hostel Secret Garden which is a bit pricey but is nice.
After dumping our stuff we walk northwards to go to the new town as we had some chores to do today! Had to get Dave´s camera cleaned as is very dirty which we managed to do. Then went to pick up a parcel that was sent to us in June but arrived after we left last time. Over an Indian lunch Dave opened his birthday cards somewhat later than intended! The marvels of Ecuadorean customs who had clearly gone through it all and taken all the cash that was sent to him!
Spotted a newspaper with a great photo of an erupting volcano at night so bought it to find it was taken on Wednesday near Banos. We were there! Didnt see it though happened at about 23.00 apparently. Some people were evacuated nearby, not from Banos, but it appears that all activity finished when we looked at it yesterday pm.
Walked down to Plaza Sucre a lovely little square with the Theatre as the main focal point. Found a chinese here that also let us take in some wine so had a cheapie dinner and then finished off the wine in the square sitting on a bench with a bronze statue. We all looked like proper winos.
