After breakfast we piled back into the jeeps and headed back past the 2 lakes we had seen which looked different in the morning light so obviously needed more photos! Then onwards driving through the desolate and rugged landscape apart from the occasional refuge for tourists. We then came to the Dali landscape, so-called as they look like the rocks and deserts in Dali´s paintings. We were disappointed to learn that he never came here though. Then onto another beautiful lake with snow capped mountains in the distance. Another, hotter, thermal pool was here so after trying to change discreetly we went in although many others didnt after the coldness of yesterday! It was lovely and warm, if anything too hot but fantastic with such amazing scenery
Then had lunch at the refuge overlooking the lake, meals basically consisting of tomatoes, cucumber, bread, hot dogs or spam plus some fruit. Was good though.
Back on the car, trying to swap seats around constantly as fitting 8 in the jeep was not easy! We then ascended further and encountered steam around us and lots of wheezing sounds, the geysers. They were not big showy ones like Iceland or NZ but there are loads and you can see the bubbling murky water in the craters. Quite scary actually as you can mistakenly walk into them if you are not careful as the ground is very soft. Further on we got to a highlight, Lake Colorado which is literally bright red. It is huge and looks like something from another planet but has been formed due to micro organisms and minerals in the water. Were loads of flamingoes here and I spent ages trying to video them and Dave photographing them. Had a lot of deleting to do tonight! After a long time admiring the lake we went onto Villa mar where we were staying tonight in a more basic refuge. It was a big place with a corrugated roof with stones keeping it in place. Inside there was running water, but no showers obviously and about 7 people in each room in crappy beds with only a couple of blankets. I think we were all worried whether we would ever sleep! We all sat around again playing cards with all our clothes on and were grateful when the heater was brought out to us to help a bit. After a nice dinner of chicken and chips (Dave was over the moon) and more cards it was bed time and although we had fewer bed clothes I managed to sleep better although I wore my beanie hat all night. You can only imagine how dreadful my hair looked next morning, needless to say the hat has stayed on constantly!
