Got to our apartment by bus last night and were a bit sceptical about Rio and safety having read some horror stories on the Lonely Planet Thorn tree website.

Up today and went to the supermarket to stock up our fridge. Then go into the centre of town and look at a few of the colonial churches and theatres which are impressive and to try and find the BA office to no avail (is now at the airport apparently). I spent most of the rest of the day in bed as still feel dodgy and Dave sorted out various bits and bobs for our stay here.

In the evening I dragged myself out of bed to watch the footie at the Maracana stadium. It is the world's largest stadium having had a capacity of 200k now 120k with seats. Went to see local team, Fluminense, play the Corinthians. Match didnt start til 10pm - on a school night! Therefore crowd was slightly smalller than the maximum at about 8k!! Were a bit disappointed it wasnt full. We went to sit with the local supporters as the tourist stands were lacking in atmosphere. They were singing their heads off throughout and had drums, flags, flares and were incredibly passsionate about it all. I felt very sorry for them as Corinthians scored after about 4 minutes! Was great to watch and laugh at their protests at the referee, etc. They lost 2-1 in the end which was a shame. Glad we went but was shattered by the end of it!
