Where I stayed
Today we had to drive east first and then get on the only road south towards the Gran Sabana. By mid afternoon we reached a massive lake where several locals were having barbies etc. We decide to wild camp here the night but wait for a while to establish ourselves and our tents so we dont attract too much attention. Ant in our group decides to swim across the lake (probably about a mile return), he eventually comes back. 15 mins later a drunken local on a motorbike drives over asking where the crazy gringo is. He sign languages that there are caiman crocs in the lake and thought Ant had been eaten. We point out that Ant is actually alive and well. He hangs around a while trying to get some cigarettes and believes that the rolly one of the group makes for him is much stronger than the Golden Virginia it actually is
After dinner and getting ready for bed Dave and I try to get to sleep and hear a vehicle very close to our tent. It then decides to turn its lights off and drive even closer and virtually into the lake. At this point we are frantically searching for our torch so that we can alert them to our presence. They manage to avoid us and leave after a while. Turns out next day it was someone in an amphibious vehicle just going for a drive and possibly try and scare the gringos. They did!
Woke up to the loudest howler monkey noises. Cant really explain it but sounds a bit like wind howling through a wind tunnel. Amazing sound and incredible to listen to.
