Weather clearing up this morning as we drove to the other side of Russell to get the ferry back to shore. Just drive on the little ferry that goes about every 10 minutes and takes about the same length of time. Nice little trip and cheaper than a proper one through the Bay of Islands!

Then started driving directly west towards the west coast. Got to Opononi which is an inlet leading to the sea and has a huge sand bar at the end which must be great for sand surfing (again not that brave!). Decided to get out and go for a walk along the coast for a bit. And guess what? We ended up having quite a long walk back into the town as Dave cleverly locked the van keys in the van!

I won't milk this too much partly because he was really annoyed with himself and partly because I did exactly the same thing 2 days previously but fortunately had forgotten to lock one of the doors so could retrieve the keys (but at least I admitted it to him). Having failed to break in alone we walked back into the town where we tried to call a garage and the police (no joy with either - bank holiday Sunday is obviously a day where you don't need petrol and no crimes are committed!) Went into the Hotel next door and a really nice guy went a got a coat hanger and drove us back to the car and jammed it into the window ledge for a bit and broke in! Were dead pleased to be back in our home without having to break another window so went a bought him a bottle of wine! People are so kind and friendly here is a real eye opener compared to home.

Drove further south down the coast and walked out to a look out to see the sand bar and shore line which was lovely and rain still not arrived yet (fortunately).
