Up to another lovely day and go for a walk around Whangerei Falls which are pretty impressive esp as pretty close to a town centre (although don't think that the town planners put the falls there for that reason!). Bit nervous as was the site of some tourists being beaten up and turfed out of their van not so long ago but walk around without any problems. Don't tend to think of NZ having any crime as feels like UK probably did 50 years ago (although am sure thats just our naivety).

After that headed out of Whangerei and northwards to Bay of Islands. Took the coastal route which we thought would be more scenic but actually couldn't see a lot for most of the way. But we did then manage to get to Russell which if we went straight up highway one would have to drive a long way round to to get to or alternatively take the ferry. Arrived in Russell which is a really nice old town and was one of the first places the Europeans settled in. The main street is full of wooden houses and backs onto the sea where the passenger ferries go to the mainland (although this is still the mainland if you know what I mean). Drove a bit further around the peninsula to a lovely quiet beach where we watched a kite surfer get thrown about by the winds and had lunch. Chilled out for a while here and decided to stay overnight as it was so nice and quiet. Despite the constant rain pounding our roof again all night - think we must have the cleanest roof in the world!
