Next morning woken up by huge lorries coming up the road so decided to make a swift exit and head north towards Greymouth. Arranged to see Rochelle, the sister of our friend, Kiwi Chris (or just Chris in NZ), for lunch in Greymouth. First headed further north to Punakaiki to see the pancake rocks - literally huge rocks that look like layers of pancakes - pretty impressive erosional stuff. Also saw the blowholes - and we were lucky it was nearly high tide so we saw it in action. We now realise what blow holes are meant to do as the other times we have seen them at low tide! Was a great sight to see the water gush up through the hole and spray everywhere.

Then drove further north to Truman Track to see the cove there which was also lovely. Back to Greymouth - another NZ metropolis and had lunch with Rochelle while picking her brains for what we should do for the rest of our trip which was v helpful.

We then decided as it was such a nice day to head over Arthurs Pass - the scenic road that cuts across the south island towards Christchurch. Was a beautiful drive up the valley and past snow capped mountains etc. We stopped for a walk on the way to Devils Punchbowl falls but only Dave managed it as it was a very steep walk uphill and my legs still hadnt recovered from the heli-hike. Arthurs Pass is well worth doing if you are heading this way at all - there is also the Trans-Alpine train that goes the same route I believe.

Got further than we planned and parked up at Leithfield Beach campsite where we cooked a lovely meal with fresh veg ( a lot easier in a kitchen than with a single gas burner!)
