Travelling to the Yangtzi
Entry 34 of 322 | show all | print this entry |
Up early again today to do our trip to Chongqing and onto our boat for the 3 Gorges. We organised the trip through our hostel 890 Yuan (62 quid each) for transfer to Chongqing, half day city tour and then two nights on board plus tours of Fengdu, Badai city and the lesser three gorges boat trip. Was going to do it all independently but was a good price and wanted to do it through a trusted source rather than when we got to Chongqing itself.
On arrival in Chongqing got on a Chinese tourist bus to do the city tour with a guide that spoke no English. First went to main people's square, onto a jewellery shop (the statutory stop on most Asian tours!) where we walked out of the 'demonstration' due to not understanding a word of it and then provoked a Chinese walk out as they weren't happy at being brought here! Next went to two old prisons which were used in the civil war in late 1940s and where a lot of communists were murdered and some managed to escape. The photos and information was interesting although wonder what did actually happen and what is propaganda (and also the fact that Chinese are brought here to reinforce their 'faith). Back to town to go to a supermarket to stock up for our trip - Chinese were buying box loads of pot noodle (every supermarket seems to have about 3 aisles worth of these!) and beer. Westerers seem to mainly stock up on the beer.
Our boat was a lot nicer than I imagined - had a cabin for 4 people and our own bathroom. Ended up sharing with 2 Chinese men (think they were father and son - although old) who didnt seem to want to communicate with us. Set off on our trip at about 8pm.
