As the week began my heart was filled with dread as a tropical depression grew southeast of the Philippines and its path continued to turn directly towards Leyte. The roof of the center won't be installed until next week, and I couldn't bear the thought of our supplies and the inside of the center being drowned by a massive rain storm. Thankfully, yesterday the storm slowed down and dissipated enough to be categorized as only a low pressure area, which will bring us some rain here and there until next week but no specific storm. After a few days of anxious anticipation I can't explain my gratefulness for such a small blessing for Cangumbang.
I spent Monday morning with the mothers of the Cangumbang Day Care Center students (including my little Jon-Jon)
Wednesday was a holiday in the Philippines so I went to visit the kids in the afternoon, they are always there and ready to play now that school is out for a few weeks. The whole village seemed to be bouncing with energy and laughter. I couldn't help but smile as I watched the children play with each other in front of the center...the mothers holding their littlest ones closely as they chatted and giggled together...the men sitting next to their newly built homes...and the center in the background with repairs nearly complete.
I can never say enough how much the past 5 months of shocked and challenged me, but at the same time it has been an incredibly meaningful time in my life I will never forget. The relationships I have are stronger than ever and my passion for developing the community is even more solidified (if that was even possible). If I look back at my blogs from this time last year, it is unbelievable how much has changed, but I still would never wish I could go back. I believe everything happens for a reason, and though it is difficult to see the positive in all this, the future is completely changed now and the only thing to do is move forward and rebuild in every way possible.
Thank you for all your continued support!
