Hi Everyone,
I took some time this past weekend to strategically surprise my kids. I waited until around 3:30pm and then my friend Rachel, along with Maila our new VFV Staff from Cangumbang, and I headed to Cangumbang. The kids never expect me at that hour considering the sun sets just 2 hours later. When we arrived they were all surprised I was there and I could see the question marks in their eyes. They asked me with their facial expressions why I was there, and Rachel and Maila told them I was sleeping over. It took each of them a moment to take it in and then they began yelling it to each other and squealing, exactly the reaction I wanted. The adults were concerned for my safety, but I reassured them it would be fine. There would be plenty of us in the center and it had a lock anyway. The kids were eager to set the tent up at course, and as soon as it was in place they leapt inside like it was a giant mattress, ignoring the hidden cement floor beneath our of pure excitement. I let them pay for a while as I was bombarded with questions about where I'd eat my dinner or whether I brought candles, followed quickly by inquiries of if they were allowed to join me in the center. In the blink of an eye they had three sleeping areas set up, the beds inside my tent, and two areas surrounded by tables and benches with their blankets lined up along a tarp and large ground mat. The sun was quickly setting, Maila invited Rachel, Jon-Jon, John Joseph, and me to eat dinner at her house. We ate and enjoyed watching the boys munch down every last bite. Then we headed to the center and played with the kids as the sun set and everyone brought our their candles and started choosing their sleeping spots. There were also 15 people in the tent including Rachel and I, I had Jon-Jon and John Joseph attached to me, literally with their arms wrapped around me and legs too.The night seemed endless since we went to bed around 8 pm, but when the sun came up the kids woke up right away. Again the children played in the tent and around in the center, while I cut up apples and bananas and they enjoyed them piece by piece. I love being with the children early in the morning there is a ease about them and they are full of innocence. We went for a walk together and then cleaned up the center, and I was back to Tacloban by 9 am, though I had already been awake for hours.
