Hello Everyone,

Tuesday the construction team continued to work on the steel supports for the second floor. When I arrived just before lunch some of the workers were literally beating some of the thick steel rods with a hammer to weaken them enough to bend. The sun was already bearing down and the nice breeze we had last week was no where to be found. The children were all in their houses for the most part, hiding from the sun or resting. It was quiet at the site, other than the loud ting of the steel being hammered.

For the most part my job is now to observe, maintain supplies, supervise the children around the site, and direct the international volunteers who come to the site occasionally. We are set with supplies, since it is a short week and we will be taking Thursday-Sunday off for the holiday. As I said the children were mostly all at home, and there were no international volunteers on the site. So after making juice for the children who did slowly trickle on to the project site, I laid under one of the houses to get an easier few of the steel work in the shade. The floor of the building sits so high that after a few hours my neck was hurting from craning it to see the work properly. Not long after I laid down, it started raining. The rain continued off and on the whole afternoon. It was a nice release from the dreadful sun that seeped through every inch of skin, and luckily the workers had already constructed a tent above themselves so they could continue working through the rain easily.

When there was a break in the rain I went in to Palo to get some lunch and buy coconut milk. Ate Wimwim suggested I try using coconut milk in the hair of those with lice. She said used to use it as a child. So when I arrived back at the site, with my friend Rachel who was visiting for the day again, we poured coconut milk on to May Joy and Josey Rose's hair. The children were intrigued of course and many of them sat by giggling and watching curiously. May Joy kept making them laugh when she commented on how sweet the coconut milk was, as it ran down her cheek and in to her mouth. Once their hair was completely wet Rachel and I combed it thoroughly, finding quite a few bugs on the comb after the first few strokes. Ate Wimwim had instructed me to have the girls keep it on for 3 hours then comb it again and wash it well, so I passed on the instructions before leaving their house.

As I was walking out of their house, with the left over coconut milk in tow one of the mothers in Cangumbang stopped me and asked if she could have some for her daughter. I checked her daughter Eliza's hair and sure enough she has minor lice too so I poured some coconut milk in to a glass and told her what to do. Then another teenage girl walked up to me and said her and her two sisters also had lice so I gave the the remaining coconut milk and told her what to do as well. I am really hoping when I arrive Wednesday that the lice issue is a bit better. Otherwise I will have to go about explaining to them how they can get it out of their home.

In the evening when I got home we had our first extended brown out since my arrival. A brown out is what Filipinos call and power outage. For about 2 hours we were all literally in the dark in Bliss. I worked on my computer in the center in the dark until the battery died and then I got some fresh air outside until the power finally resumed. I also found out last night that the water will be shut off to Bliss for at least 24 hours this week, apparently they are fixing a water line. Hopefully I don't get too dirty in Cangumbang on Wednesday!
