We arrived quite late to Georgetown and checked into a cute guesthouse called Rima before heading over the road for a quick beer before bed (always got to try the local beers as soon as possible). We met the owner of the bar and he gave us a quick rundown of the town and said it's not as dangerous as the guidebooks suggest. The next day we went exploring and booked ourselves on a flight to Trinidad for the following day. There are some beautiful buildings and the town is always very lively. We found it to be perfectly safe and the people really friendly. We had some great jerk chicken and covered just about the whole town on foot. We also went to the zoo, which gets the award for both being the cheapest zoo (50p each to get in) and the worst, as most of the animals were in tiny cages and you could stick your hands in most of the cages (apart from the lion of course - but that didn't stop people throwing stones to try and get her to do something). I admit I did scratch the head of a tortoise, but held back from touching the anteater that was begging for food by hanging out of its cage. I only wanted to go because they have manatees in the river by the zoo, but I never got to see them. The next morning it was back to the airport, which is about 20 miles out of town, but you get to go past all the rum distilleries which smell great. So it was time to head to the Caribbean in time for New Years Eve (not something we ever expected to be saying on this trip).
