We are nothing if not flexible

Ok, the title of this entry might give you some clue that our plans didn't go quite according to plan. We arrived in Manaus and stayed in a clean, but simple guesthouse in the centre of town. The next morning we headed off to the bus station to buy our tickets to Venezuela, intending to get on a bus up to a port on the north coast which would take about 36 hours. A killer but worth it as we would be on Isla De Margarita, an island in the Caribbean sea for New Years Eve. Then we found that the buses weren't running until 2nd January as Chavez the president of Venezuela had shut the land border until then! So we were in the middle of the Amazon, we couldn't go north as the border was shut and the flights were too expensive and we couldn't afford to fly back south either. West was also out as there are no roads so that would mean a 4 day boat journey down the Amazon and still be in the middle of nowhere! We could stay in Manaus, but it be honest it's not that nice. People come here to do jungle trips, but we'd already done that in Bolivia for about ¼ of the price. So it was back to the guidebook and map to see where we could go. There wasn't really a lot of choice, we had to go East, to Guyana. it seemed quite an interesting place so we went for it. So we got an overnight bus to Boa Vista and then a flight to Georgetown, the capital of Guyana.
