Mile 537.5

Saturday, April 28, 10:31 PM

Weary and worn from an emotional day and night on a long road, we pulled into the KOA in Jonestown, PA.  After slowly exiting the truck, I fought to straighten my legs against the aches, then ambled up to the office, which was closed of course, and picked up our late arrival packet.  We found the site easily enough, and we both fell into our rituals of setting up the RV for the night.  My job was to drop the landing gear and stabilize the rig, hook up the electrical, water, sewer and television and Kathy would extend the slideout and get things prepared on the inside.

She was slow getting out of the truck, so I went in to extend the slide, and after I did, Karen stuck her head out from underneath one of the two easy chairs.  "Hello, Karen Cat," I said in my best cat voice, but sad that I could only say hello to one cat.  Then she scooted away.  A few seconds later, she popped her head out from underneath the other easy chair, only this time, her face looked a bit rounder.  Hold on a second.  I quickly reached down, grabbed the cat by the scruff of the neck and pulled.  And who should appear like a rabbit out of a hat in my hot little hand, but Girl Cat!  No way!  She was hiding under that chair for the past eleven and a half hours!

I was so relieved, I gave her a big hug – much to her disdain – and held onto her as I brought her out to the truck to show Kathy, who was equally surprised and happy.  So now I felt that I didn't lose a window so much as I gained a cat.  But I still did lose a window.  And I didn’t gain a cat.  I already had her.  Basically, it was a net loss of a window on this one.

So that night I taped a black plastic garbage bag over the window frame but suspected it would blow off at highway speeds. In any case, it would keep any rain out overnight.
