I have been having trouble adjusting to the time change here and have been waking up every morning  between 4-5....and can not go back to sleep, so after my amazing breakfast on my veranda, ( that wasn't until 8 am) I headed out to do some exploring before the day got too hot, which seems to start around 9 am. My guest house is on the outskirts of the main town, which is nice and quiet, and also not too far from walking distance to get to things. Upud has a famous monkey Sanctuary which is really close by to where I am staying so it was my first stop for today.
I love my monkeys, and have been lucky enough to have some pretty good experience with the little fellows so far in my travels,( the purse snatching monkey in Malaysia wasnt too bad)  but I have heard some stories, some scary stories ....about these Bali monkeys....
You are warned to not wear ANYTHING that they can grab off of hats, sunglasses, jewelery, and if they even think that you might be carrying some of those bananas, and that you are trying to hide them and possibly divvy them out later, forget about it....they will attack you, jump on you, and make you run for your life.....Sounds like fun, doesn't it?????
So I was ready, none of the above listed items on me, only my camera ( the guy at the entrance said it would be okay, even though I was a little worried even carrying that!) And NOOOOO bananas.......
The entrance is like walking into a dark forested jungle, which added into the scariness even more, and it was early so at the time I was the only one venturing in. Why was I even doing this? Of course I had to see for myself if all this talk was true, and I am in Bali for adventure and excitement after all!
I first saw them after about 5 minutes, they like to hang out high in the trees at first, and they also seem to like hanging out by the temples. The "trained" workers of the sacred monkey forest feed the monkeys so they are a little less crazy for your bananas ( which again, I had none) and I stopped from afar to watch this trained worker hand out his bushel of bananas to the crowd, and he called out a sort of monkey call from them to gather. I have never seen anything quite like this, they came out of everywhere to this feeding ,lots and lots of monkeys, and some of these monkeys were BIG, and hairy, and they had really, really, big teeth.
All was well, for a couple of minutes until , I have no idea what set them off, I was standing pretty far back along a path, i guess one of the monkeys grabbed another, and they turned to chase the one who did the grabbing, and the whole pack of them started running toward me, and there was about 30 of them......!!!! There was a sign at the entrance saying that if one comes toward you like he is going to attack to stand still, back away slowly, and give them what ever they are looking for. I had nothing, not even my camera out at this point, I was just at the wrong place at the wrong time...I stood still....HOLY %$#@*!!!!!!  They ran past me and one huge one swatted my skirt in passing just to mess with me I guess and I think i saw my life pass in front of me, or at least myself trying to explain to my job while i will have to stay in Bali for longer because I'm in the hospital after being attacked by a gang of crazy monkeys!!! How many time have they heard that one before!
So that was enough for me, I left the forest and went and bought some cute earing's at a shop across the street, the rest of the day was fabulous.
