I have taken a lot of really long plane rides. The longest ones are the ones that I take when im taking a journey, a trip non work related, to some far off destination. This journey will take 5 flights to arrive in my final destination, Palawan Philippines This trip will take almost 2 days, if you count in all the flights, and sits in between flights. With this many connections, its good to have the sits. it breaks up being in the air, and also is a great cushion for all that can go wrong when youre flying, and the delays and unexpected things that can mess up making it to your next flight. This is what happened to Chrisitne today as she was leaving chicago to meet me here in Narita, where I already am, enjoying some free sushi and draft Kirin Beer at the United Club. Thunderstorms, and a minor mechanical brought chirsitnes plane back to the gate and almost 2 hours late departing finally. We had a 4 hour connection here in Narita before our next flight to Guam, so no worries at all so far.
I remember working a flight home to san diego last year that was delayed several hours for some low clouds in SFO. while in the air there was a very anxious couple ringing their call button trying to get my attenion..." excuse me! " they called out. " we have a very short time to make our Cruise that is leaving from San you think we will make it? We are going on our honeymoon." what time is your ship scheduled to depart? I asked. " it leaves at 5 pm they said nervously. I look down at my watch...its is now 4:15 pm, and we were to land at 4:30.
Seriously? you booked your honeymoon cruise to leave less than 3 hours from when you were to land ...leaving no time for delays...making it to the ship, registering, and making sure you were safely on board???? Are you out of your mind, or do you have the stupidest travel agent ever who hates newlyweds and cares less about you and your happiness????
No, of course I didint say that. But I sure was thinking it. I smiled and said ..." well, its going to be a tight one...I will move you to the front of the plane so you have a better chance to make it" The cruise ship was pulling off port as we made our finall approach into San Diego. Its a great view as your coming in to land. I know they saw it too. Its a tough lesson sometimes...but when it goes bad,,,you never do it again.
The flights continued to be successful, the club lounges in which to refuge and kill some time decreased in luxury. But grateful for the quiet space , and lots of outlets to keep your devices fully charged.
We landed in manila at 9 am , one of our toughest flights as the planes continued to shrink in size, the passengers did not, feeling sandwiched in between families and restless travelers.
Finding a open spot to sit on our " borrowed " blankets from the plane, we await our final flight to the island of Palawan, and puerto Princesa . Lunch is a local outside cafe, right away you can see how cheap everything is. 3 dishes.. $2 .. Total. Lets just get a bit of everything then! One more flight to go. We left home almost 35 hours ago. Excitement is a cure for surviving any long journey.

"Excitement is a cure for surviving any long journey". No truer words were ever spoken Elizabeth! Should be the title of your book. I am so happy you are experiencing a new destination. Roberto lived there from 1969 to 1971 and was quite the scuba diver. Enjoy some ponsat and lumpea for me. Lots of Phillipino restaurants here in San Diego when you return.
