Where I stayed
Carla is still sound asleep at this point, I am wide awake searching the beams trying to find out what little critter( hopefully little) is making that rustling noise. It takes me about 10 minutes to locate him, he is camouflaged into the bamboo beam hes laying on, its a large lizard. Hes about 9 inches long...he sees me, and now i stare at him waiting to see what he will do next now that hes been discovered
So, back to the lizard...We are having a staring contest for about 10 minutes, neither one of us has moved. Carla wakes up and turns to me, " what are you staring at?" I say without moving my glance up above.." A lizard on our ceiling..." " WHAT DO YOU MEAN THERE IS A LIZARD IN OUR BUNGALOW?" Carla sits up immediately to say. It takes a little getting used to sharing your place with critters that were her long before us, they are probably saying the same things about us.." Hey, there's a bunch of humans in our space...hope they don't hurt us..." and all the while , that's exactly what we are thinking about them.
This island is special...it only around 10 bungalow operations, which all have their own bars and restaurants, and they close, along with all the lights , at 10 pm. That's about how crazy it gets here. The beaches are a powder soft sand, and surrounded with a crystal clear turquoise water. The water is very shallow and you can walk in some spots out forever. The boats only come in here twice a day, so the waters are quiet, and there isn't the loud long tail noise buzzing in the air as many of the popular Thailand islands
We are staying at Paradise Bungalows, the hippest place to stay on the island and the very first to build here as well three years ago. The German owner, Rudy, is a very friendly man, with a interesting life and story in which he survived the Tsunami in 1994 , and was in Sir Lanka at the time and was in a coma for 11 days, barely surviving, decided to take his life in a different direction and moved to this island, living his life the way he always wanted. Hes a lovely man, and came by to greet me personally this morning and take my breakfast order.
Our bungalow is basic, and has a nice veranda with cushions and a hammock. The bed is very comfortable, always a huge bonus when traveling thur anywhere in Asia. The restaurant here is the stand out feature with large beam ceilings, open air sides, and large lounge cushions with window seat ocean views. The music is mellow, and the food is fantastic, I can see why this is the spot to be.
Carla is out snorkeling today on a day trip to some great spots, there are only a few people on her boat, making it even more unique and personal. I'm taking a day to myself on shore, just to catch up on some writing, and reflect on how great my adventures have been so far, and that could take all day.....
