After many trips traveling on a budget, there are times when once in a while, you just have go out of your budget, and do it up big. My friend Maureen will be very envious now telling how Christine and I did just that on our first night on beautiful Phi Phi Island.Maureen and I loved going out and splurging on drinks at a fancy resort while going back to our budget bungalows at the end of the night,. just having a little taste of the really elite kind of travel life. I have stayed at the Viking Resort a few times on my trips to Phi Phi Island, once with my friend Sara celebrating her big 30th birthday,  and all the rooms here are unique and fabulous, but some of the rooms are so amazing, that you just have to splurge and go for the really top of the line ones., and that's exactly what Christine and I did on our first night here.
We stayed in a villa room up on the top floor which the room itself was 3 times the size of a normal hotel suite , with a garden style bathroom and a deck that overlooked the ocean and could seat about 15 people,,,it was incredible. The art and design alone is enough to take your breath away. The rooms are built like tree houses that have winding staircases that twist up to the open air balcony complete with large hammock and hand carved outside dining table and seating area.  The artwork alone was worth more than I make in salary in one year. The bedroom is one big open suite with unique carved furniture and artwork . The bathroom was huge! Almost the size of my entire studio at home! The large king sized bed was draped with an enclosed mosquito net to add to the romance....( yes, I was there with Christine, but staying here definitely inspired me to come back someday with someone special!)
This room would of cost at least $500-$1000 a night back at home or any other resort in the world , but here it was for the giant cost of ...$100. We enjoyed every minute of that incredible room, leaving only to eat and spend a little of time at the beach. We met a lovely Canadian girl , living in Amsterdam named Heather who was staying next door to us. Funny enough, she decided to splurge as well, treating herself to one of these amazing villas. I have traveled and stayed in some pretty amazing places,,,but I have to say, this place really tops it all. It has the ambiance, the creativity, and the romance all wrapped up in one, our villa room here really raised the bar for me, and it would be hard to top this one.
Phi Phi is one of those islands, where most people say, " its so crowded and touristy there" well, I have to agree to alot of those statements, but I would also say " it is one of the most beautiful islands not only just in Thailand, in the whole world,,,,and you just don't know where to go on that island to get away from it all...and  luckily I do."
This island was made famous by the movie " The Beach" starring Leonardo DiCaprio, several years ago, in which Leo's character was in search of an island that one only dreams exists. with white sand beaches, and turquoise water, and no one else around except for the few that were lucky enough to find it as well. If you saw the movie , you know how it ended...He found out that paradise came with a price....if you haven't seen it, you definitely should rent it.
The island in which they used in the movie is a sister island, called Phi Phi Ley, and is a national park, so other than the many, i repeat, many tourists that visit it daily, there is no accommodations, only a small restroom for the day trippers, and you come and you leave...and i hope it stays that way forever. Christine and I took the day tour which stopped at monkey beach so we could see the monkeys playing, a swimming hole which was like a giant blue swimming pool surrounded by limestone cliffs, some snorkeling in deep turquoise water, and a little time to enjoy the " Beach" along with crowds of other people looking to do the same.
Our half day tour, including snorkel gear, lunch, fresh fruit and water....300 baht ( $10) incredible.
Also, other things that you could spend $10 on here in Thailand...
A bottle of suntan lotion...they sure know we need it, and its pricey, I always bring a couple of bottles from home with me.
A whole fish dinner BBQ on the grill with a beach view...
A tent for the night on the beach in the Similan islands..
A Hammock, which you could tie onto the bottom of your backpack, and its a instant bed/lounge place anywhere.
So, back to our island...we pretty much stayed at our Viking Resort, ,moving to a modest, but equally as cute bungalow for our other two nights, enjoying a private beach, and nothing to do but talk about what we were going to eat for dinner....yes, the days here have been rough :)

Wow Mom...first of all...your photos are like artwork! They should be worth as much as we make in a year! You are sooo good! That room really looks like it should be around $750 a night! I am glad you did deserve it and it looks amazing. That little overcrowded "Beach" island looks amazing too! I can't believe how white the sand is and how great the water is! I am glad you are experiencing all this! It's cold here! Haha
