When you're truly on vacation you can allow sounds of nature to  wake you without the need for setting any alarm clock. Starting the day unplanned,  is truly the way to enjoy a vacation. So this morning with the sounds of the birds and even a woodpecker to start the day, which wasn't enough to wake Carla, thanks to some awesome earplugs ,  it gave me a little time to spend  in my early morning in the hammock to do a little writing. The weather has been beautiful every day.  I continue to have the best travel karma when I go on vacation. The sun was shining bright and only with a few clouds in the sky to give us that much-needed breeze, it was a  perfect way to start your day in paradise .
I can't say enough about this location that we picked to stay in Roatan.  The hotel is so charming and the people are so nice,  it has a great vibe.  It's actually  mostly divers and backpackers who stay here. A lot of divers come to Roatan to get certified, since its one of the cheapest places to take the diving course and to dive off the beautiful waters surrounding the island with even a few ship wreaks to do some exploring.  There's also one of the coolest local bars called sun downer's right across from our  hotel which seems to be the popular hang out spot and a great happy hour too! So after a leisurely morning,  Carla and  I am took a cab to the other side of the island called West Bay where they're supposed to have some of the nicest snorkeling and to give us a different perspective of the island. This island truly is immaculate .  They take very good care of it since tourism  is one of the biggest means of income here. .
We spent the afternoon snorkeling off a beautiful white sand beach that we basically had to ourselves.  We noticed some construction on this  side of the island as well, which seemed  to be  at a halt.  or just moving very slowly.  I'm sure this beautiful locations has been  attracting some people for some time  who would like to come down and retire or possibly timeshare in this area.
The feel of this island can be best described as a toss between Mexico and the Caribbean. The feel is very rustic, but the colors and vibe are very Caribbean with a toss of a little Pirate. Any where that there is a beach, and some warm weather, you are always going to get the few Expats who come down on vacation, and never leave. They usually can be found at the bar in the afternoon, or even morning right when the bar opens. They sit at the bar shirtless and have stories to tell, and don't have a place to be or a care in the world. You can't blame them really, isnt that what we all dream about? Running away to island to live and never coming back to so called reality? Well, they made a movie about just that called the "Beach" and for those of you who saw it, know how that reality turned out. So Paradise sometimes is better visited and appreciated  for the dream and hope for all that it is. Visiting it once in a while keeps that vision alive.
