Well, December 6 is really St. Nickolaus day, but I'm a week late in posting about it. It's really like a little vorspeise (appetizer) for Christmas. The night before children have to clean their shoes (or boots if they are farm kids) until they are shiny, and then they put them by the furnace, or outside the door. St. Nickolaus comes in the night, and brings candy and little toys to fill the shoes with. For a hilarious story about the tradition of St. Nikolaus and the Holland kids, follow this link to David Sedaris.
