Dehorning
Entry 61 of 73 | show all | print this entry |
I'm updating! Yay. Two entries in one day because I've been in wildly different places lately. Last week I was in Görlitz to dehorn pregnant heifers destined for Russia. Since the system was put in place the last time, it went quite well. Gave a little iv sedation, sawed off the horns, cauterized the vessels, sprayed a little antibiotic, and the heifers never knew what hit them. We did 80 of them on Tuesday, then drove down to Leipzig where we were giving lectures to German cow vets.
These lectures are from my Budapest trip to the cattle conference, the drug company that paid for us to go has us give summary lectures on what we learned while there. A good way to disseminate information, I think. I had to give a short lecture on differences between vet med in the US and Germany. And it was IN GERMAN!!! Yikes. It went ok. I stumbled over my words sometimes...but oh well.
Aside from that, work has been super busy. Had one of "those" days on call over the weekend, was on the road from 9am till 11pm and racked up 400km. Saw a number of regular sick cows, plus one who had decided to spew her uterus all over. After 2 hours I finally got it back in. I was feeling rather victorious, until she died 15 minutes later, surely from shock, which I had tried to correct the whole time with iv fluids wide open, but to no avail. She was followed by two dystocias, a middle of the night call and a DA the next day. Thankfully my Sunday afternoon was spent enjoying coffee and cake in ruhe (in quiet) with some work people!
