Hmm...so I left off Tuesday evening. Wednesday morning was spent driving to the airport getting the last of the family...Kevin and Mark flew in uneventfully and we picked up a rental car that we now a little comically pack ourselves into. We hadn't planned too much for the afternoon, the rest of the family knowing that the need for sleep would win over the want to see/do/explore anything. So, the two boys slept  and the rest of us went to a nearby town to explore. Hassfurt is only slightly larger than my town of Hofheim, but it has a much better town center with a better variety of shops.

Thursday we planned a full day. The town of destination was Nurnberg. First stop was to the IKEA, to see what there was to see. I had wanted to get a shelf for my living room, however there is quite literally NO space in the car with all 6 of us in it. So that will have to wait for another day Making cookies..and my pink hair.

. Did manage to get a few things, though. Next stop was finding the Christmas market. We wove all through town and eventually found the markt center. The Markt was huge!!! Much larger than any others we had been to. Slightly different food, too. Here was the first sighting of a 1/2 meter long hot dog...so of course the boys had to try it. (well, Alex did. The other boys went with the more traditional nurnberger bratwurst). The really awesome thing about Nurnberg was actually walking into the markt. The altstat (old part of town) was surrounded by amazingly large and impenetrable looking walls. Town walls are normal here in Germany, but these were quite impressive, with them following a river around town, and being quite tall and thick. I'll post photos. On the way bak to the car, Mark and I saw lights on in some parts of the wall, specifically right in the middle of an awesome bridge. It almost looked like apartments...we thought that would be the greatest place to live...

Friday morning came and we lounged over breakfast. The boys are fascinated with German breakfasts. There are two main types. One focuses on bratwurst (or bockwurst, which has an interesting definition....it literally means "boy" meat...not sure about that one...but tasty nonetheless...) with bread and mustard (there is a proper way to eat it, two handed, of which we have a demo photo...). The other form of breakfast involves many different kinds of great rolls and meats and cheeses and basically is like eating sandwiches for breakfast Sunrise from my balcony.

The rest of Friday was spent enjoying the town of Wurzburg. We found the Christmas market, had some lunch (another completely unique dish, a noodly type thing with sauerkraut and cheese and bacon...yum!) Then we took a guided tour of the residence palace in the middle of town. This was the seat of power, as it housed the prince bishop of Wurzburg for a long time...now you might be thinking, what is a prince bishop? It's basically a religous and political leader all in one...None of this separation of church and state business...The residence withstood the bombing of the second world war without the domes collapsing. (The center withstood, the wings were made of more wood and less stone, and thus burned). The handwork from the artists employed for this construction was amazing.

Friday evening we had a party thrown for us by my colleages at work, it was so sweet! We ate great food, and had alot of fun visiting until all hours of the night. Most of my work people were there, so all were able to get to know each other. Although, the discipline to stay speaking english is often lost as it gets later in the night, and my family surely knew what it was like for me in my first month when everyone was speaking only German and I didn't understand anything...

It's now time to eat breakfast and I'll try to find some photos for you to post along with this entry...
Love you all!!
Beth
