Another Sunday has come! I'm in the clinic working, trying to furiously catch up on e-mails, it will definitely be nicer once I have internet in my apartment. Hopefully in the next week or two. Anyhow, this week went well. Not too much exciting to report. Typical herd visits, the big farm, some small farms, a couple alone, which was great. On wednesday I went with our nutritionist to some farms down by Munich to palpate while he did some feed stuff. The langage there was all new to me. They speak the dialect Bayerische, which is waaay different from Frankish, which is what I'm more used to (although I still can't understand much of it--people try to speak high german for me, so I can understand). But, the Bayern version of German was beyond anything I could comprehend. I did alot of smiling and nodding. Thankfully we only have a couple farms down that far...
Thursday Christane and I vaccinated a farm (1100 animals) for Salmonella
This weekend there's the festival in Hofheim, Kirchwoche, so I've been walking into town for the assorted activites (and excellent festival food). Last night I ran into my landlords there, so I sat with them and a bunch of our neighbors for a while, enjoying the German music and chatting. I had to focus to understand above the music, and the dialects, but could do ok.
Last week I went with Regina to a cool pilgrimage church in a neighboring town. It's a catholoc church, and the ceiling was painted by an artist who was showing the 4 (that's all they thought then...) continents, and the animals on them, and the people. The interesting part is that he had never been to these places, so imagine trying to draw an elephant without ever seeing one...turned out quite well. It's neat because there are optical illusions there, too, there's a hunter with a bow, and no matter where you are in the church, he's pointing the arrow at you. So, that was my cultural expedition for the week.
I'm off to try and make chocolate chip cookies, it's Regina's bday tomorrow, so I thought I'd try. This was before I went shopping for the ingredients. Finding some was challenging, and I had to improvise...so we'll see how these turn out. I'll keep you posted.
Love,
Beth

Hauptstrasse mit kirchewoche
. The farm has some postive carcasses on slaughter, and it's a reportable disease in Germany, so everything has to be vaccinated, and they have to be cleared of the disease (which I think is debateable on the possibility of accomplishing...but that's another topic)... I got the job of vaccinating the calves, heifers and assorted others, so I had the rodeo show. Talk about a dirty job, and the bruises to go along. But, we got it done, and then had the traditional sausage and brot for breakfast. With coffee and sweets, so all was ok. :) This weekend there's the festival in Hofheim, Kirchwoche, so I've been walking into town for the assorted activites (and excellent festival food).
